Montgomery County Association for the Blind has two major fundraising events each year. In April, we hold our annual golf invitational at a private club in Montgomery County.

2008 Golf Outing Supports Vision Rehabilitation

image 1

On April 16th, 2008 MCAB held its 7thAnnual Golf Invitational at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.  The weather was just right—not too hot and not too cool, but sunny and clear.   Everyone was excited to be out on the greens on such a beautiful day.  Banquet speaker, Lee Allman, shared inspirational comments about the accomplishments and legacy of his father who was blind.

Event Chairs, Dr. Gary Itzenson and Jay Silverman, pose with Kyle Lograsso (center).

Dr. Gary Itzenson and Jay Silverman were co-chairs of this very successful outing.  MCAB is very fortunate to have their leadership and the participation of the entire Golf Committee including: Neil Fleming, Tom Harrington, Ted Kapnek, Dr. Bruce Markovitz Noam Roizman, Kent Selko, Thomas Strohm, Tom Teesdale, Ted Truver and David Weber.  MCAB thanks all our volunteers including Delta Gamma Sorority.

Guest player: Kyle Lograsso

At just 5 years old our youngest golfer joined the field.

image 4image 2Kyle, working with his father Jeff, as his Caddy, played an outstanding round.  Kyle demonstrated his driving techniques and amazed the crowd.  Kyle just missed winning the Blindfolded Putting Contest.

Tony Leodora  (pictured with Jeff Lograsso pictured to the right), host of Golf Styles Magazine, interviewed both Kyle and his Dad.  When asked why they were at MCAB’s golf outing, their response was that they wanted to show people that having a visual challenge does not mean that one cannot participate in many activities—one just does it a bit differently.

image 3Kyle Lograsso is a typical 5 year old; he loves his matchbox cars, playing Wii and being a pest to his two older sisters Kristen and Kaley.  What makes Kyle different from others is what he has overcome.  Kyle was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of two.  Retinoblastoma is Cancer of the eyes, which Kyle had in both of his.  His left eye was removed in order to save his life and he received six moths of chemotherapy to get rid of the four tumors in his right eye.  Through it all Kyle was infatuated with golf.  Kyle joined MCAB’s outing to show that someone who is visually impaired can play golf and other activities.

Having successfully beaten Cancer twice, Kyle is now a poster child for children overcoming Cancer.  Kyle has been featured in Golf Digest and Golf World Magazine, he has been on the Ellen Show, HBO Real Sports, CBS News With Katie Couric, and has met the likes of Greg Norman, Freddie Couples, Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson and many more golfers.  Kyle is a wonderful golfer who one day plans on beating all of Tiger Woods’ records.  Who could doubt this young man who has overcome so much to inspire so many!

Golf Notes from the Executive Director

If you’ve been around our golf outing long enough, you may have personally experienced the blindfolded putting contest, the blindfolded drive or played with a blind golfer.  Ever wonder how those golfers get those skills to take up the game as a person who is blind?

If you can imagine, take that example a giant step further.  Ever wonder how people take up and manage their lives as a person who is blind?  Similar to the blind golfers, they have coaches…coaches with the skill, determination, expert training and compassion to enable their “students” to make progress.  These coaches can teach skills of daily living, how to travel independently, how to use a computer system, how to find a job and many other areas of support!

And where do you get help from these specialized coaches?  MCAB of course!
